ABOUT US
Where Rugby Meets Youth Empowerment.
Who We Are
The Rugby 7s For Kids is a charitable not-for-profit organization that mobilizes resources and facilitates grants to support the development of age-grade and youth rugby in Kenya at the grassroots level. We utilize the game of rugby as a medium for socio-economic transformation through; life skills empowerment, career mentorship and educational scholarships for thousands of young Kenyan boys and girls who may not have such privileges.
We also channel resources towards coaching and refereeing development programs alongside health, nutrition and environmental awareness initiatives in partnership with schools and community age-grade centers.
OUR VISION
BRIEF HISTORY
The Rugby 7s For Kids concept was developed in honor of the Late Andrew Onyuna (November 5th 1977 – June 12th 2021) a legendary Kenyan rugby figure who was a pioneer founder of the Kenya Rugby Union (K.R.U) Youth Rugby Development programs for schools in Kenya back in the late 90s. His passion for the sport led him to establish age-grade rugby training centers in almost all major towns and schools in the Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western provinces of Kenya before he relocated to the US where he continued mobilizing resources and supporting these age-grade centers until he met his untimely demise in Washington DC where he used to work as a consular in the Kenyan Embassy.
Coach Andy as he was popularly known started playing rugby at the Nakuru RFC Mini-Rugby Series program when he was still at St. Joseph Primary School in Nakuru City. He was among the rare players to be selected in the First XV for the Menengai High School “Nomads Rugby” team in his first year of admission. He was the Junior Team Captain in his second year and was made the senior team captain in his third year.
Andrew Onyuna was the first student-player-Coach to take the Menengai High School team to the Kenya National Secondary School games finals, and also Coached the Rift Valley Schools Combined to win the inaugural Lucozade Junior 7s Trophy. This was the school’s category at the globally renowned Safari 7s Rugby Tournament in Nairobi Kenya. He joined Nakuru RFC after completing high school and featured prominently as a fullback in the Kenya Cup alongside taking his professional Coaching programs with the union. He later player-Coached Nakuru RFC and was the brainchild behind the Watembezi Pacesetters franchise that featured in invitational tournaments in the East African region.

Legend Andy was also the brainchild behind the Mabrooks wear which comprises of fans merchandise branded with Kenyan national colors, and is very popular with Shujaa 7s fans at the Kenyan Corner during HSBC IRB 7s circuits. His contribution to the growth of rugby in Kenya is huge. His love for age-grade rugby development was immeasurable and today we are honored to watch cohorts from his kids’ centers featuring for Kenya 7s at the international stage.
The Rugby 7s For Kids non-profit organization has been established to carry on this rich rugby legacy. We believe that every child deserves an opportunity to use their talent to make a change in their lives. We honor your dream legend Andrew Onyuna!
